Back and neck pain is incredibly common to experience. In fact, it’s estimated that nearly 80% of people will experience some form of back or neck pain in their lifetime. Degenerative disk disease (DDD) can be a common cause of back and neck pain and is a natural part of the aging process.

How Physical Therapy Can Help

When you work with a Physical Therapist to relieve back pain caused by DDD, your Physical Therapist’s primary goal is to help you continue to participate in your everyday activities and life roles. Depending on the severity of your back/neck pain, you’ll receive a treatment plan that’s tailored to your specific pain and recovery goals. Here are some ways a Physical Therapist will help as you work through back and neck pain:

  • Your Physical Therapist will give you some stretches and flexibility exercises to practice at home. This will help to improve the function and flexibility of the joints and muscles of your spine, arms, and legs. Oftentimes, improving joint motion and function helps to relieve a majority of the pain you’re experiencing.
  • Recommend aerobic exercise that’s safe for you. This recommendation will be specific to you based on your condition and what will be the most beneficial for you. Aerobic exercise can help to manage weight and relieve pressure placed on your back.
  • Provide education around proper posture and body mechanics. Your Physical Therapist will be able to show you how to sit, stand, and move correctly to minimize the pain you’re experiencing.
