Where are our snowboarding/skiing enthusiasts at?

Today, we’re sharing some of the most common injuries experienced from these winter sports. If you do experience any of these, it’s crucial to understand the important role physical therapy plays in helping you recover.

ACL Injuries – These are one of the most common knee injuries experienced by skiers and snowboarders because of the twisting and turning required in the lower extremities by these sports. Symptoms to watch for that will indicate this injury are popping sounds accompanied by sharp pain and swelling in the knee.

Torn Rotator Cuff Injuries – This often happens due to repetitive injuries and/or strain on the shoulder. Repetitive injuries and strain can be caused by falls experienced during activity. Some symptoms that may indicate this injury include a dull ache in your shoulder area, pain accompanying stretching the area, and weakness leading to a difficulty in raising the arm away from the body.

Fractured Clavicle Injuries – These often happen during snowboarding or skiing due to the pressure placed on this bone during falls. Symptoms can include pain over the clavicle (collarbone), swelling, tenderness, and bruising.

Wrist Sprain/Fracture Injuries – When you fall during this sport, the natural reaction is to reach out with your hands to catch yourself. This leads to the common injuries of wrist sprains or fractures. Symptoms that indicate this will include pain, bruising, swelling, and weakness or inability to grasp objects.

Herniated Disc Injuries – A fall while skiing or snowboarding could result in this injury. Symptoms include numbness or tingling in the body part with affected nerves by the disc, weakness, along with pain in your back.
