Following a car accident or traumatic incident, it’s common to experience whiplash. Whiplash happens when there’s forceful movement of the head on the shoulders in any direction. Those who experience this may suffer from pain for months at a time if not treated. Our Physical Therapists are experienced in patients who have whiplash and understand how to treat this condition. Here are some procedures to expect as you work with your physical therapist to recover from whiplash.

  • Soft tissue massage: This targets muscle tension that is often the result of whiplash. This should help your muscles and tissues heal faster.
  • Hot and cold therapies: The heat allows for increased blood flow to the area, increasing oxygen and nutrients to the area. This also speeds up the recovery process. The cold therapy helps with pain and reduces inflammation. Right after the accident, you can use this therapy at home to speed up your healing process.
  • Ultrasound: This therapy increases blood circulation, reduces muscle spasms, cramping, swelling, stiffness, and pain. This promotes healing of the neck soft tissues.
  • Range of motion exercises: These will be determined by your Physical Therapist depending on your mobility during the initial evaluation. It’s important to not rush into any activity too fast, as it can cause damage in the early stages of your injury. Your Physical Therapist will guide you into these as you start to heal.

If you’ve experienced an accident which has lead to whiplash, your best bet for a quick recovery will be to choose physical therapy. Give us a call to schedule your appointment with us. Sometimes after an accident, a referral from a doctor is needed to begin treatment – if going through the car insurance agency. 801-571-0099.
